Recap

After overcoming a deficit to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, Sunderland surged to second position in the Premier League (PL) standings, snapping the Blues’ four-game winning streak in all competitions.

After barely four minutes, Sunderland’s hopes of finishing second in the table were dashed after they had achieved their greatest eight-game start to a Premier League season since 1999–2000.

Pedro Neto started the counterattack against the Black Cats and found Alejandro Garnacho, who sprinted down the left and then fired a low shot through Robin Roefs’ legs to score Chelsea’s first goal.

After a long throw caused chaos in the Blues’ area, the visitors gradually regained their composure, and Wilson Isidor was the first to react, flicking the ball past Robert Sanchez from close range to put Sunderland back on level terms.

Isidor was firmly in the game when a wonderful play almost turned the result on its head, but he missed the post with his shot.

Luckily for the home crowd, Chelsea regained control of the match towards the end of the first half. Garnacho nearly took the lead again, but Roefs scrambled away his back-post shot on the slide, and Trevoh Chalobah fired a long-range attempt over the bar with a crucial touch from the goalie.

Perhaps fed up with the way the game was going as the hour mark drew near, Enzo Maresca went to his bench and substituted Estêvão for Garnacho, who scored the goal. The Brazilian immediately lifted the Stamford Bridge crowd with a deflected strike that went just wide.

Only Brighton (5) has scored more goals this season than Sunderland, who have three goals through substitutes.

This season, Wilson Isidor has more Premier League goals than any other Sunderland player with four goals. For the first time this season, Régis Le Bris’ team played a back five. They maintained their organization in the second half, limiting Chelsea to half-chances as the game came to a close.

Substitute Brian Brobbey kept the ball up and laid off for Chemsdine Talbi to sweep home the winning goal in stoppage time, giving them the ultimate reward.
