Carson Wentz to miss the rest of the NFL season due to shoulder injury

Following surgery on his left shoulder, Minnesota quarterback Carson Wentz was put on injured reserve by the Vikings on Monday, with the expectation that he will miss the rest of the 2025 season.

Wentz started as a backup quarterback for Minnesota and went 2-3 after J.J. McCarthy was sidelined by a sprained right ankle following a 1-1 start.

Wentz will need season-ending surgery after playing despite a dislocated shoulder for the previous three weeks due to a torn labrum and shattered socket, according to multiple reports.

McCarthy has resumed practice and is probably ready to play when Minnesota hosts Detroit on Sunday, according to Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Wentz, who signed a one-year deal as a backup in August, struggled in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday and his 10th NFL campaign ends with 110 completions in 169 passes for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions.

Adding the Vikings to a list that started with Philadelphia in 2020 and went on to include Indianapolis, Washington, the Los Angeles Rams, and Kansas City, Wentz became the first NFL quarterback to start for six different clubs in six seasons this year.
