Crystal Palace 1–1 Chelsea: Late Mateta Equaliser Extends Blues’ Winless Run

Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta made the late equaliser for Crystal Palace, as Chelsea could not win (1-1) to retain their four-game Premier League winless streak.

Cole Palmer opened the scoring for the away team at 14 min Selhurst Park, his 13th league goal of the campaign following creative incisive play by Jadon Sancho.

Enzo Maresca’s team could have added, and certainly would have, to their advantage many more goals in the endeavour to secure a first league win since 15 December but Nicolas Jackson and Josh Acheampong, amongst others, were responsible for squandering opportunity.

Mateta had been Palace’s main source of danger for the duration and he finally equalised when he followed Eberechi Eze’s pass eight minutes from the end.

With the draw placing Palace six positions clear of the bottom three in 15th, Chelsea remain in fourth spot by one point ahead of in-form Newcastle United who won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this day.
A good performance grants Palace a fair point, although their site form away from home is still a problem, with only two wins in 11 home matches (W2, D5, L4) that keeps Glasner’s team 15th on the overall league table. Loss of the 4 would have left Chelsea out of that position by the end of the weekend, but a point makes little difference to Chelsea’s hope of a title challenge, as the gap to league leaders, Liverpool is now nine points, with 2 games still in hand.
