Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak both netted as Newcastle United completed a comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur to record a fifth consecutive Premier League victory, 2-1.
Isak extended his rich form with a shot to hand Newcastle the lead in the 38th minute of Saturday’s fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs battered by injury and sickness had field their youngest Premier League starting eleven (23y, 336d) in 3 months, since March 2015 (23y, 290d).
However, it was Eddie Howe’s squad who then had to complete a turnaround after being knocked down early by the good Dominic Solanke’s fourth minute header.
Though Spurs’ defensive issues came back to bite when Gordon swiftly restored parity, just 140 seconds later.
Due to Isak’s exploit of Radu Dragusin’s error, Isak, for the seventh game in a row,
scored and helped to bring about a successful win for the new year 2025.
While Newcastle consolidated their place in fifth,
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham remain 11th as they suffered their 10th defeat in the league this season.
How the match unfolded
In the presence of new England manager Thomas Tuchel, two Three Lions prospects fired the bedazzling start of the game. Solanke won the duel with Sven Botman to head in from Pedro Porro’s good cross.
But Spurs’ lead lasted just 140 seconds, as Gordon slotted in coolly from a tight angle,
with the goal confirmed after the VAR checked for handball by Joelinton in the build-up.
Gordon came close from the same scenario in the 21st minute,
but Brandon Austin stopped sharply at his near post, Isak did so from Jacob Murphy’s cross.
However, not missing later, yet, when the ball was teased again Murphy cross by Murphy (delivered again to Isak by Dragusin),
by providing it its only path to an inviting net, Isak did not miss late.
Brennan Johnson struck the post in search of a Spurs answer after the break,
while Gordon missed a gilt-edged opportunity at the other end as he headed away.
Substitute James Maddison curled just wide to spark a frantic conclusion in which Johnson and
Sergio Reguilon flashed across the face of goal as an equaliser evaded Spurs.
