Rasmus Højlund Late Heroics Propel Manchester United to Europa League Top Eight.
Manchester United staged a dramatic comeback victory by beating victori Plzeň 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) and successfully ending a 20-month-long streak of away European victories.
The outcome further saw United’s first six matches
unbeaten run for a European campaign since the 2013/14 season and give a lift to hopes of progressing in the tournament.
First Half: United Dominate Without Reward
Bar the Doosan Arena, Manchester United were yearning for a way out of a dismal away record in the country’s coldest climate.
Even with holding 70+, possession through the first 30 minutes, the Red Devils failed to turn their possession into meaningful chances.
Riding the crest of their home fans’ fanaticism, Plzeň countered fiercely while looking dangerous on the break.
For United the only really good chance came via Bruno Fernandes,
who came on from midfield and powered a dipping volley, which was spectacularly parried by Martin Jedlička.
But the first part of the game ended in a goalless draw,
and there is much to think about for Ruben Amorim’s team.
Second Half: Early Shock and Tactical Tweaks
For just a three minute’s injury, the problem for United worsened three minutes into the second half when Plzeň utilised Andre Onana’s dreadful error to score the winner.
Onana’s own error ball saw it landing at the feet of Pavel Šulc,
who laid it off to Matěj Vydra for a clinical finish, which put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
Noticing the pressing situation, Amorim made key changes to include Rasmus Højlund and others at the start of the hour. Danish striker immediately responded to the shot, consequently forcing a save Jedlička, who then scored in the 62nd minute. Ever so stealthily, Højlund converted a deflected shot from Amad Diallo knocking the life back into United’s bid.
Late Winner: Højlund Seals the Comeback
The closing stages saw United push relentlessly for a winner, leaving gaps at the back that Plzeň failed to exploit. J
just when a draw seemed to be the only possible outcome,
Højlund scored again in the 88th minute, whatred nicely following an immediate free-kick from Fernandes.
